THE AVATTERI INITIATIVE
#AVATTERIYA

OUR INITIATIVE
In the olden days, an ‘avatteriya’ (neighbour) was one who was able to visit households in their areas, for reasons that ranged from asking for help, to simply going to check in. Over time, this normal has ceased to exist and our sense of ‘avatterikan’ (neighbourliness) has faded. We understand how important it is to have a supportive neighbourhood in times of crisis.
For this reason, through this initiative, we aim to create a ‘new normal’ in which we can bring back the ‘avatterikan’ (neighbourliness) in the Maldivian Community.
THE #AVATTERIYA PROGRAMS
We aim to use technological aspects, and a sense of community to bring about a new normal in which neighborliness can still flourish, even while practicing physical distancing. Due to physical distancing during this crisis, we often tend to feel lonely, or detached from the rest of the world. So, we realize how important it is to have a supportive community around us in times of need. We hope to do just that with our programs.
